A long time back, maybe ten years, I had an idea for a mystery: a woman wakes from a long coma to find her world is completely different. I worked on it and liked it, but at the time I was under contract to two different publishers for series, so I didn't have the time I wanted to make the story work.
Late in 2024, I found the MS in my files and thought, "I could update this." I did. I love it. But my editor pointed out some flaws that needed work. And more work. And more work.
I love this story. The characters are great (That's the editor's take as well as mine) and the story is compelling. But juggling three different timelines is making my gray hair ever grayer. There's the time period when Tonnie went into the coma. There's the year from when she woke up to now. And there's now, when she's trying to find out why people think her cop husband was taking bribes and why someone's trying to kill her. Each time has clues. Each clue has to add to the reader's journey from knowing nothing to knowing everything. While all that's going on, relationships must develop between Tonnie and those around her. Who does she trust? Who are her people?
I will get this, and it feels like it's coming pretty soon. But right now, my murder mystery is murderously tricky.
(Note: The pic is a cover in progress too. I don't guarantee it's done yet.)
