Every days, multiple times a day, I get messages from people who want to help me sell my books. They promise all kinds of success, but in my (admittedly) limited experience with spending money on advertising, they seldom deliver. Yes, they will put my new book (YESTERDAY'S MURDER, in case you're interested) before all their subscribers. But here's what they don't say: dozens of books will be listed along with mine; their subscribers are often other authors trying to sell their work; and there's little chance my book will stand out in the crowds of books those sites pump out every day. They're make their money on authors' dreams of getting noticed.
Recently I've been getting some really cleverly written teasers. The writer takes one of my books and does a nice, very favorable analysis of the theme. Then they tell me the book would be perfect for book clubs. Later comes the price tag, several hundred dollars for a list of book clubs, with no guarantee of anything. I have no proof, but I'd be willing to bet that ninety percent of the time, book clubs go with authors backed by houses that can afford to promote them all over the place.
I always feel sorry for newbies on Facebook or in chat rooms who think they're going to sell a million books as soon as people find out their book is out there. Face it, kiddies: there are something like 30,000 new books coming out each MONTH in this country. Don't let someone get a chunk of your money by telling you they can put you at the top of the bestseller list.
